Blind box, how does it work?
The principle, the vocabulary, and what you need to know before opening.
The principle, the vocabulary, and what you need to know before opening.
the principle
All the models in a collection—usually 6, 9, or 12
scarcity
The hidden model, missing from the list and far rarer than the others
the cardboard
The complete case of a series, which includes all regular models
exchanges
A model obtained multiple times — the basis for exchanges between collectors
the formats
The same series often comes in the form of a figurine, a hanging pendant, or a keychain.
identification
The card provided with the figurine, indicating the model obtained and its series
That's the very principle of the format. You can't select a specific figure when you order one of these — otherwise, it wouldn't be a blind box.
Each series has its own odds of getting the secret rare. These are published by the manufacturer on the series' information sheet: check them on a case-by-case basis rather than relying on a general rule.
The method is circulating widely within communities. Packaging has evolved to counter it, and its reliability is highly debated—don't base a purchase on it.
The collector's card and the box are part of the piece: keep them, as a complete figure retains its full collector's appeal.
